KBS internships provide work-related experience under the guidance of knowledgable mentors in various academic and career fields. Unlike our REU and URA positions, they are not research-focused opportunities. Each internship advertisement below includes a separate link to an online application. While applying, please be prepared to answer questions about why you would like to participate and to upload a pdf file of your resume. If you would like to apply for several positions, you must fill out each appropriate application. Internships will be posted in January and applications are due by March 1st or shortly thereafter; please refer to position descriptions for details.

Kellogg Bird Sanctuary: Environmental Education Internship - Summer 2013

  • Director of Science Camp: 4 weeks of day camp includes 1 week of leadership camp for 7th and 8th graders and 3 weeks for 1st-6th graders
    • Train and supervise Senior (2) and Junior Counselors (8)
    • Develop and deliver programming on a wide variety of topics, including natural history, experimental design, sustainability, use of tools such as compass, gps unit, wildlife trail cameras, scales, fishing poles
    • Oversee and lead daily activities of camp
  • Develop and deliver educational programs at  Wild Wednesday programs for young families
  • Assist with event planning and production of newsletters, articles, brochures, web page, signage and other educational and promotional materials
  • Bookstore greeter and clerk; field phone calls
  • Completion of agreed upon intern project
  • Assist Avian Care staff with occasional projects (Such as, care of captive and reared birds, weekly bird surveys, nestbox monitoring, care of bird feeding station, etc.)

KBS Communications Office: Application deadline, Friday, April 19, 2013.  A Media & Marketing Internship (part-time) is available to a current student or recent graduate studying graphic design, advertising, marketing, public relations, communications, journalism, etc. Interns will work under the supervision of the KBS Communications Coordinator to market KBS academics, research and outreach programs & events. Get hands-on experience with us!  Knowing how to ‘sell’ your organization, its mission and its activities to the public is among the most sought-after skills by employers in today’s nonprofit world. Learn what makes nonprofit marketing tick and how to apply your own unique talents to effectively communicate (y)our passions – environment and education - using various media. Starting in July 2013, upto 22 week experience. 

 

Science Education Internship: Curriculum Enhancement for Alternative High Biology

This is a paid internship to work with a multi-disciplinary team of educators and scientists to create hands-on science modules to enhance on-line curriculum used for biology and environmental science in a High School Alternative Education program.  Intern will spend time in the classroom interacting with students and teachers in the Alternative Ed. Program at Gull Lake Community Schools (GLCS) and gaining experience with the format and content of on-line courses. Then will work with a High School teacher and KBS graduate student to develop instructional modules to enhance curriculum that meets the Next Generation Science Standards based on research done at the Kellogg Biological Station. The intern is encouraged to enroll in a summer course at KBS that will enrich their skills and experience in science: http://www.kbs.msu.edu/education/summer-courses. W.K. Kellogg Farm: Kellogg Farm's Pasture Dairy Center features the nation's first LEED-certified agricultural facility and supports a spectrum of agricultural and ecological research. A Pasture Dairy Management & Outreach Internship (full-time) offers hands-on experience assisting with the daily operations of KBS's pasture-based dairy facility. An Agriculture & Climate Change Communications Internship (part-time) focuses on communicating climate change science to professional audiences and can be completed along with a KBS summer course.

Grounds Department/W.K. Kellogg Manor House: One Lake & Landscaping Internship (part-time) and one Landscape Design & Management Internship (full-time) are available each summer to current students or recent graduates interested in landscape design, management, horticulture, environmental science, biology, etc. The part-time intern is encouraged to take a KBS summer course along with the internship. Both internships work with the KBS Grounds Department to beautify the historic W.K. Kellogg Manor House Estate. These positions are funded through the Conservation Legacy Fund and W.K. Kellogg Manor House and Estate Endowment.

W.K. Kellogg Biological Station Conference Center: We are sorry, due to a change in staffing we will not be offering this position for summer 2013.

W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary: The Sanctuary offers four, full-time internships each year. Three Avian Care Internship positions are offered spring (January-May), summer (May-July), fall (July-December) to those studying wildlife biology, ecology, biology, zoology, animal science, natural sciences or veterinary sciences. The summer Avian Care internship is only open to current MSU students. One full-time Interpretation/Education Internship is available each summer (June-August) to MSU students studying wildlife biology, ecology, biology, zoology, education, natural sciences, environmental science or a related field. The fall Avian Care Intern is supported by the Joe Johnson Endowment for Wildlife Conservation. Read more about Sanctuary internships here.
