Students will create a true hunting decoy from cork and basswood. Course instruction covers all aspects of creating a hunting decoy including: carving, texturing, painting, sealing, keel construction and weighting. This class is designed and taught with the beginning student in mind but experienced carvers wishing to reinforce or brush up their technique are welcome.
Instructor, Willy McDonald is an accomplished carver with three Best of Show (BOS) wins at the Ohio Decoy Show’s Shootin Stool Contest, Gulf South – 2002 BOS Hunting Decoys, BOS Northwestern Michigan Carving Show, Wildfowl Carving Magazine author and 2007 winner of the Michigan Heritage Award.
The Sanctuary’s auditorium will be used as the workspace and the ducks on Wintergreen Lake will serve as live models in our outdoor classroom! Lodging is available just around the corner at the W.K. Kellogg Conference Center.
