Conducting Research at KBS

A Kellogg Farm staffer harvests corn in a research field at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station.
A researcher crouches in a grassy area while taking notes on a clipboard.

KBS provides research opportunities for visiting researchers from the MSU campus and around the world. Research projects may or may not be related to existing work at KBS but should be consistent with the KBS mission. Shared-use field sites and facilities are specifically designated to support the research of resident and non-resident faculty.

Process for setting up a research project

Establishing a research project at KBS requires several logistical arrangements that should be made well in advance. Contact the KBS research coordinator for specific information on availability of field sites, laboratory space and facilities, or other resources (see details below). Modest site use fees may be charged for use of KBS facilities after submission of a Site Use Request Form, or SURF. Contact the site/facility lead for information on fees associated with each facility.

Learn more about KBS field sites and facilities.

How to conduct research at KBS

  1. Contact the research coordinator or site/facility lead.
  2. Fill out a Site Use Request Form.
  3. Inquire about any site use fees.
  4. Organize lodging at KBS (if needed).

Contact us to learn about shared resources available at KBS to help with research (e.g., computing, IT, classroom or office space, instrumentation, stockroom).
