New in 2012!  Wet & Wild Leadership Camp for 7th-8th graders!

Summer camp at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is a great experience.  Not only is the Sanctuary a beautiful place to explore nature it is also part of a vibrant research community, Kellogg Biological Station.  Summer science campers are able to conduct experiments and utilize the expertise and instruments available to students and faculty at the Biological Station.

This year's theme: Water Quality and Conservation

Featuring:

  • hands-on science from experiments and visits with KBS researchers,
  • field studies to learn about local watersheds,
  • collecting and analyzing samples,
  • surveying insects and birds,
  • working as a team to form hypotheses about land development and what makes a healthy watershed.

Thursday night will be an overnight at the Sanctuary (tents and 3 meals will be provided).  Of course we’ll also go swimming in Gull Lake, fishing, canoeing along with other camp favorites.

Who: Students entering 7th and 8th grade. Leadership Camp is excellent training for campers who would like to become Jr. Camp Counselors (9th – 12th graders).

When: June 25-29, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an overnight stay on Thursday

Joining our camp staff for the Wet and Wild Leadership Camp week will be Jan Brinn and Darren Bagley.  Jan and Darren have helped to create an amazing plan for the week and will be on hand to help implement all the great experiments and activities we have designed.

Science Camps for 1st - 6th graders:

Children in grades 1st - 6th (2012-13 school year) will explore the Sanctuary grounds, Kellogg Forest and the Kellogg Biological Station engaging in fun, hands-on games, activities and experiments.  Science Camp is a great place to meet new friends and learn about science by exploring the natural world.  Each week of day camps includes all camp songs and games, swimming in Gull Lake on Friday afternoon and science experiments and activities that are age appropriate.

Who: Children in grades 1st - 6th (for the 2012-2013 school year)

Where: Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, located near Augusta, five miles east of Richland and ten miles northwest of Battle Creek.

When: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parents may choose an early drop-off time at 8 a.m. for an additional fee.

Cost: Members, $120/camper/week, Non-members, $130/camper/week

Discounts: Kellogg Bird Sanctuary members receive a $10 discount.  Early bird registration by 5/14/2012 and receive a $10 discount. Sibling discount $5 per session. Multiple camp discount $5 per session.

2012 Day camp session dates & themes:

  • July 9-13, 2012: Winged Wonders (1st-6th graders)
    • Spread your wings and fly from experiment to experiment.  How did birds, butterflies and bats develop this amazing ability?
  • July 16-20, 2012: Animal Planet (1st-6th graders)
    • Animals live across the globe and throughout the Sanctuary.  Big or small we’ll investigate many different species to find out what makes them special.
  • July 23-27, 2012: Survival Science (1st-6th graders)
    • Test your survival skills!  Study the natural world to find examples of true survivors.  Do you have what it takes to survive in the wild?

Parent Information Packet

After registering for camp you will receive a confirmation letter and the forms below in the mail.  The Medical Treatment Authorization and Child Information Form must be completed, signed and returned to the Sanctuary Office one week before your child attends camp.

Meet your counselors!

Mia_and_Josh_shirt_signing_webMy name is Mia I go to Michigan State University and am studying special edcuation. My favorite game at camp is drip drip splash (especally when the temperature is 90 and up). I cannot wait to see the returning campers and meet the new ones. Camp is the highlight of my summer and I am counting down the days until is starts!

Sam_and_Foxy_webHello Campers, My name is Samantha Crum and I have been a part of camp for five years and am thrilled to be returning for my second year as your Senior Counselor. I am currently attending KVCC studying Nursing which means if we have a stumble on the trails, there's no need to worry, it's Nurse Sam to the rescue!  This year at camp will be the most fun yet, so join us and lets continue to enjoy and discover the world around us!"

Joining us for Wet and Wild Leadership Camp:

Jan is the MSU Extension Educator in Allegan County where she grew up. She has worked for MSUE for 15 years in 4-H Youth Development.  An accomplished professional in Extension Education with a proven record of success in support of Leadership and Civic Engagement through global education, communication & conflict, leadership, global citizenship programming and diversity; Academic Success in the science areas of animal, plant, environmental and technology/engineering.  She works with the 4-H Camp Kidwell in Bloomingdale with a variety of programming opportunites as well.  She will be recieiving her MSU Masters Degree in Youth Development this Spring.

Darren is the 4-H Youth Development Educator in Gennesee County.  He has worked for MSU Extension for over 11 years and for the past 3 has served as the 4-H Youth Development Educator in Genesee County.  His areas of expertise are youth natural resource programming and youth leadership & government engagement.  Darren is a Delton Kellogg High School graduate and has been interested in conservation from a young age.  Along with his high school biology teacher, he started a water quality monitoring program on four lakes near Delton Kellogg High School.
