4H Backpack To Adventure: Youth Leaders in a Global World – Training for educators

Who? Educators, anyone involved in 4H or MSUExtension (adults and high schoolers)

4-H Backpack to Adventure: Youth Leaders in a Global World is an innovative, competency-driven and research-based curriculum from Michigan State University Extension. It is designed for adult and teen volunteers, parents, professionals and others to use in working with young people aged 9 to 19 to develop the knowledge and skills they need to become youth leaders in an interconnected, global environment.

During the training you will be introduced to and participate in a few activities from the full curriculum.  You can buy print or electronic (pdf) versions of 4-H Backpack to Adventure: Youth Leaders in a Global World (4H1643) from the MSU Extension Bookstore at bookstore.msue.msu.edu.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commit to the entire camp schedule: Summer day camp runs for 4 weeks, June 17-19, 23-27 and July 7-29, 2014.  Mandatory counselor training on June 19-21 and wrap up on July 28-29, 2014.
  • Hours of work: Typically Monday-Friday, 35-40 hours a week (8 a.m.-4 p.m.; commitment to stay until 5:00 pm one day a week may be required).  Exception: June 26 (overnight campout during Leadership Camp)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Demonstrated experience working with children
  • Working toward or a degree in education, environmental education, biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record
  • Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR/AED for Adult plus Child and Infant
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and distinguish colors and sounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Additional qualifications:

  • Lifeguard certification(helpful, but not necessary)
