This April, we’re celebrating National Poetry Month with Poetry on the Trail! Explore the beauty of nature through the written word as you stroll along our paths, where poems are placed to inspire a deeper connection with the environment around you.
Visitors can gather inspiration to create their own nature-themed verses using prompts from the Sanctuary’s Resource Center. Then, stop by our Haiku Corner at the Overlook building, where paper and writing supplies will be available for budding poets interested in crafting their own poem.
Featured works include:
- Kadeem Gilbert, assistant professor of plant biology at MSU-KBS, who writes haiku
inspired by moments in nature, inviting readers to notice the small wonders around
them. - Mikayla Thompson (Cherokee Nation descendant), whose poetry explores grief,
love, and joy reflecting on her relationships with family, community, and the natural
world.
