n us for a two-day grass identification course at the Kellogg Biological S
tation (KBS). This immersive workshop runs 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day an
d combines fieldwork\, lab sessions\, and expert instruction.\n\nIn the wo
nderful world of plants\, grass-like species can be tricky—even for expe
rienced botanists. You may know the saying\, “sedges have edges\, rushes
are round\, grasses have nodes all the way to the ground.” Need more th
an that? We’ve got you covered.\n\nGrasses (family Poaceae) occur worldw
ide in nearly every ecosystem—from forests to wetlands to grasslands. Wh
ile incredibly abundant\, they are also remarkably diverse\, often occupyi
ng unique microhabitats. Identifying them can be challenging.\n\nThis cour
se will build your confidence by exploring grass anatomy\, key identificat
ion features\, and ecological clues that make species recognition easier a
nd more accurate.\n\n&nbsp\;\nAbout the workshop:\nDesigned for conservati
 on professionals\, land managers\, naturalists\, and curious learners\, th
e workshop will be taught by experienced botanists specializing in plant e
cology\, rare species\, and vegetation monitoring.\n\nThis course will be
led by Dr. Tyler Bassett (Michigan Natural Features Inventory) and Brad Sl
aughter (Orbis Environmental Consulting)\n\nWorkshop Focus:\n\n Identific
ation of grass species\n Hands-on exploration of grasses in the wide rang
e of habitats in which they occur.\n Species-level determination using la
b and field specimens\n Field visits to sites in the greater Kalamazoo an
d Barry County area\n\nParticipants Will Learn:\n\n Morphology and termin
ology used to identify grasses\n A greater familiarity with grass species
encountered in southern Michigan\n The ecological role of grasses in a w
ide range of habitats\n\nRegistration Includes:\n\n Instruction from vete
ran field botany professionals\n Lab and field identification sessions\n
