A. Using Data Nuggets: real research, real data, real classrooms (Stack 138)

   Age range: Middle- high school

Organizers: Elizabeth Schultheis (Postdoctoral researcher at MSU BEACON Center), Marcia Angle (Retired teacher from Lawton Community Schools), Dr. Melissa Kjelvik (Postdoctoral research at MSU)

In this hands-on session we will demonstrate Data Nuggets. You will walk away with free resources that help students ask their own questions and discover meaningful relationships in data. Data Nuggets address NGSS standards, help students with their C-E-R writing and of course give your students reliable, real data.

 B. Population Booms and Busts: modeling population dynamics in the classroom (Stack 140)

   Age range: 7-12th

Organizers: Robert Logan (KBS Graduate Student, Integrative Biology) & Meredith Zettlemoyer (KBS Graduate Student, Plant Biology)

Short description:Ever wonder how populations go boom and bust? We will use a game to collect data where students will model population growth rates, carrying capacity, and predator-prey interactions, as well as manipulate organisms’ traits, to collect and graph their own data on population dynamics.

 C. Fun online sources to talk about C cycle and biofuel production from the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) and Carbon TIME websites.  (Stack 141)

   Age range: 7-12th

Organizer: Dr. Caro Cordova (Postdoctoral researcher at KBS-GLBRC)

Short description:A brief walk through available online resources with classroom materials and activities related to the carbon cycle and biofuel production provided by the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center and NSF in partnership with Michigan State University.

12:00pm  Lunch (McCrary Dining Hall)

Costs:

Program is FREE and includes breakfast and lunch.  (K-12 Partnership programs are always free to teachers and we offer substitute reimbursement to districts and free SCECHs)

Learn more:
The KBS K-12 Partnership is a joint effort among KBS scientists, MSU College of Education faculty, and science teachers and administrators in southwest Michigan school districts. Since 1999 the partnership has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, including awards from the Long-Term Ecological Research Program (DEB), the Teacher Retention and Renewal Program (EHR), awards from the NSF GK-12 Program (EHR), and the NSF Math and Science Partnership. The partnership provides teachers in-depth exposure to research topics in environmental science and training to teach inquiry-based science at the elementary and secondary levels.

Major elements of the KBS K-12 Partnership program are:

  • Professional development opportunities for teachers and graduate student fellows that focus on providing inquiry-based approaches to learning about and effectively teaching science in the K-12 classroom.

  • Providing opportunities for K-12 teachers in other programs at KBS and MSU; including serving as mentor teachers for undergraduates studying to be teachers and Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) positions in faculty labs.

  • Creating new opportunities for K-12 teachers and MSU faculty and students to work together to deepen and improve the way science is taught and communicated in our community
