All We Can Save: A Book Club

The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station Long-Term Ecological Research Program presents a book club of women farmers and educators focused on All We Can Save. Our goal is to build a community of women to share experiences and wisdom of those who nourish land and the next generation, in order to help us live mindfully in the face of climate change.

Who: Women farmers and K-12 teachers and informal educators; we are capping attendance at 24 people total.

When: Synchronous Discussion Sessions on Tuesday evenings, 7:00-8:30pm EST.

Dates: January, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st; February, 7th

Where: Online via Zoom!

Expectations: Each participant will be expected to complete 1.5 hours of homework per week: Reading (about 10 -15 pages), outdoor reflection, and journaling. We also expect that each participant will participate in all Zoom discussion sessions.

Compensation: Each participant will get the following:

1. A copy of All We Can Save
2. A notebook for journaling and reflection
3. A stipend of $150
4. For Michigan teachers, 6 State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs)

The Book Study will bring (virtually) together a group of women farmers, K-12 teachers, and informal educators over the winter of 2022-2023. We will center our discussions on All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis, edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine K. Wilkinson. Participants will engage in five, synchronous whole group and small group discussions. Between each meeting participants will (asynchronously) read a section of the book and participate in an outdoor observation and journaling exercises. The observations, journaling and group discussions will allow us to unpack and think intently about the themes in each chapter. Together we’ll reflect on our experiences with climate change, share the science and grief related to climate change, and pass on our experiences and wisdom.
