Art Stewart, writer-in-residence for the week at KBS, will share some of his science poetry during a leisure walk on the Bird Sanctuary trails. This program is free; preregistration is appreciated. Contact KBS Community Relations for more information.
Stewart did his dissertation research at KBS (Ph.D., 1980) under the direction of Professor Robert G. Wetzel. His investigations then focused on the sources, sinks, and biological effects of dissolved humic substances in freshwater lakes.
Stewart’s poetry is inspired by science. Each of his books thematically addresses science from a different perspective. Rough Ascension, for example, deals with the problem of science writing and scientific communication, and Bushido: The Virtues of Rei and Makoto, addresses the value and need for respect (Rei) and truth/sincerity (Makoto) in science. Similarly, in The Ghost in the Word, he considers the role of ambiguity as the key ‘starting point’ for both science and poetry. His most recent work, Elements of Chance, still in manuscript form, deals with the principle of causality – a key assumption in scientific belief.
A legacy of conservation; a commitment to sustainability.
