The Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) K-12 Partnership invites K-12 teachers and educators to a book club focused on Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha’s What the Eyes Don’t See. This memoir tells the story of how Dr. Mona, alongside a team of researchers, parents, friends and community members discovered that the children of Flint, Michigan were being exposed to lead in their tap water. As we gain understanding of the science and social (in)justice within this true story, we’ll work together to build community and share ways to bring place-based, local problems into our science teaching.
Participants will engage in three, synchronous whole group and small group discussions. Between each meeting participants will (asynchronously) read a section of the book and participate in an outdoor observation and journaling exercises. The observations, journaling and group discussions will allow us to unpack and think intently about what happens during each book section.
Participation limited to 30. To apply for a spot in the book study, please fill and submit this form by June 14, 2023. We will be notifying all applicants on June 16 if they have a spot in the book club.
This experience is being planned and will be facilitated by an awesome team of educators!
