Alisha A. Shah

Join the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station community at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, for a talk on how insects tolerate and react to warming temperatures.

The presenter for the fall 2022 Dessert with Discussion is eco-physiologist Dr. Alisha A. Shah, a KBS-based researcher and assistant professor in Michigan State University’s Department of Integrative Biology.

The basics

  • Time and date: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022
  • Location: KBS Academic Building Auditorium, 3700 East Gull Lake Drive
  • Audience: Adults
  • Fee: Free

In her talk, titled “Can insects take the heat?” Shah will share some of her research that focuses on thermal tolerance in insects, and how vulnerable they may be to climate change-induced changes in temperature.

Dessert with Discussion will be held in the KBS Academic Building’s auditorium, located at 3700 East Gull Lake Drive, and also will be streamed via Zoom. The talk is free and open to the public, and registration is required.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the Kalamazoo Chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, Kalamazoo Area Wild Ones, and Pierce Cedar Creek Institute will have informational booths open. Both in-person and virtual attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions following the talk. People attending in person will also be able to take home a to-go dessert.

Dr. Shah is an eco-physiologist who is interested in better understanding why some places are more biodiverse than others by using the temperature tolerance in insects as a clue. She is a conservationist at heart and uses her data to predict how vulnerable insects and other animals are to climate change.

Shah came to KBS in early 2022 from the University of Montana, where she was a postdoctoral research associate in UM’s Division of Biological Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. in zoology from Colorado State University.
