Employees from the Battle Creek, Michigan, Lowe’s location helped the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary make progress on several projects this
past fall.
Lowe’s employees spent two autumn days, Oct. 24-25, lending their skills to the Sanctuary to help accomplish a few needed projects.
Contributing time and energy
Through the Lowe’s volunteer program, local stores choose an organization each year in their community, then they volunteer there and help with projects.
This year, Lowe’s donated several tools that will help maintain living areas for the resident birds, and 27 volunteers contributed some 215 work hours to the Sanctuary, helping with a number of projects, including:

- Creating half-doors in the Leslie Tassel upland gamebird enclosure to better shield the Sanctuary’s pheasants and quail from the weather.
- Replacing the roofs and doors in the area in the pheasant quarantine area.
- Painting classroom and lab spaces at the Sanctuary.
- Beginning work on replacing headers for the raptor enclosures, which is an ongoing project.
Lisa Duke, Sanctuary manager, said of the volunteer days, “It was an amazing experience to work with our local Lowes. The precious gift of supplies but more so of the many people hours working to improve our bird areas was very impactful. These projects were something that would have taken our staff a whole year to accomplish if not more.”
A legacy of conservation; a commitment to sustainability.
