During the reading, set for 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, in the Sanctuary’s Overlook Building, Silverman will take readers on a journey through nature’s music, highlighting the rhythmic sounds of wood thrushes, crickets and woodpeckers. After the reading, there will be a hands-on activity, using instruments from the Richland Community Library’s Library of Things, to further explore some of the sounds we hear in the natural world.

The reading is free with regular admission to the Sanctuary. For Sanctuary members, admission is always free. For non-members, admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $4 for children ages 2-17.

Overlook Building and Storybook Walk themes

Cover of the book Starlight Symphony, by Buffy Silverman, showing an owl against a dark, muted background.

Each month, the Overlook hosts themed activities in a cozy, indoor space with beautiful views of Wintergreen Lake. The Overlook is located along the Sanctuary’s Paved Path, and the activities are ideal for children ages 3-6.

The September theme is “extreme ecologists.” Families can engage in related reading, craft, and dramatic play activities during regular Sanctuary hours.

During spring, summer and fall, pages from a storybook are posted along the Paved Path for families to read as they walk. The September story is “Starlight Symphony.”

October themes are:

  • Overlook: It’s Owltober!
  • Storybook Walk: “Owl Babies,” by Martin Waddell

The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is located at 12685 East C Ave. in Augusta. Questions? Contact the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary at birdsanctuary@kbs.msu.edu or (269) 671-2510.
