Lakeshore landscaping to protect water quality

What to expect:

Enhance & Protect Your Shoreline!

Own a lakefront property in Michigan? This hands-on workshop will teach you how to improve your shoreline and support your lake’s health! Explore planting options, see real-life demonstrations, and connect with fellow property owners over lunch. Then, work with experts to design a personalized shoreline landscape for your property. Plus, take home native plants from Wild Ones to kick start your project!

Partners: This workshop is being held with Gull Lake Quality Organization, Michigan State University Extension, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), Kellogg Biological Station, and Wild Ones.

Presenters:

Erick Elgin is a limnologist and water resources educator with MSU Extension. He promotes and researches the wise use, protection, and restoration of our freshwater systems. Erick’s recent efforts include aquatic plants, lake management, natural shorelines, and invasive species. He has an M.S. in aquatic ecology from the University of Calgary and a B.S. in natural resources management from the University of Minnesota.

Julia Kirkwood is a Senior Environmental Quality Analyst with the Michigan Department of Environmental Great Lakes and Energy. She works with various organizations and agencies to restore and protect inland lakes and rivers. She chairs the Michigan Natural Shoreline Partnership and created the MI Shoreland Stewards Program, an online survey recognizing lake property owners for managing their property in a lake-healthy way. She also started the MI Shoreland Stewards Ambassador Training program.
